VENICE'S CARNIVAL - the origins
The Carnival of Venice is the most mysterious event in Italy and the most famous Carnival in the world, being well recognized for its unique and elaborate masks and dramatic soirées.
During the Ancient times, it celebrated a symbolic passage from darkness to light, from winter to summer; it was a fertility celebration. The word itself comes from the Latin words "carne levare" - "farewell to meat" and it has been used during the last banquet on the last day of the Carnival. During those times, it was an opportunity for everybody to engage in great parade celebrations held on the streets, while wearing masks, and an opportunity for the commoners to eat well and to indulge in sensual pleasures.
